The 2009 Durango HEMI® Hybrid takes that a step further with its two-mode system that integrates a hybrid-electric drive — which reduces fuel consumption by almost 54 percent[1] while running errands in town — with the brute power of a 5.7L HEMI® V8 for towing and highway driving.

Fuel efficiency, an inherent byproduct of the two-mode system, is also an integral part of the HEMI® V8 engine itself. A Multi-Displacement System (MDS) allows the Durango HEMI® Hybrid to do something traditional hybrids cannot – increase efficiency after switching to automatic transmission mode. When cruising at highway speeds, MDS deactivates half of the cylinders, making the mighty V8 a fuel-efficient four-cylinder. The payoff is an increased overall fuel economy of nearly 25 percent.
Viper's six-speed manual transmission features 10 percent wider gears that increase shift quality and torque capacity to handle a whopping 560 lb-ft of torque. During extreme steering maneuvers, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP)[1] helps maintain control by sensing when the vehicle is starting to over- or understeer. The system automatically applies individual brakes or controls the throttle to help you stay safely on course. Challenger SRT8® is specially tuned for performance handling, and gives you the option of switching ESP[1] off when you don't want the extra hand.
